About Our Chapter

NCL Scottsdale Serving the Community!

National Charity League, Inc. is a non-profit national organization of mothers and daughters dedicated to serving their local communities. The Scottsdale Chapter is devoted to enhancing the mother and daughter relationships of our members while philanthropically helping our community. We also incorporate educational and cultural events for the girls. Our goal is to develop civic awareness and responsibility in our daughters.

NCL Mission Statement

To foster mother/daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experience.

National History

In 1925, a small group of women interested in philanthropic work founded the Charity League in Los Angeles. They worked quietly, doing Red Cross work, making layettes and assembling and delivering baskets of food to the hungry at holiday times. Sometimes they brought their daughters with them. By 1938, so many daughters had become involved that they decided to form their own group. They called themselves the Ticktockers. In 1947, these groups united to become the first mother-daughter charity and took their present name, National Charity League. At that time, the mothers also took their name, Patronesses. The newly formed group decided to expand its program beyond philanthropic work to include educational and cultural activities.
NCL was reorganized and incorporated as National Charity League, Inc. in 1958. The first "Chapter Day" was held in 1959; the first NCL Convention was held the following year. These meetings brought the growing membership together for an exchange of ideas and support.

National Today

National Charity League, Inc. has a National Board of Directors, which represents the organization’s five Regions and one hundred sixty local Chapters throughout the United States. NCL continues to carry out its Mission – to provide service to its communities while fostering the mother-daughter relationship. Through our volunteer work today, we hope to make the world a better place tomorrow.

The Scottsdale Chapter

The Scottsdale Chapter was started when a member of the Phoenix Chapter approached one of their new members and asked her if she was interested in starting a new chapter. Phoenix had a wait list at the time and knew that there was a keen interest in the Phoenix area. So, the Scottsdale Chapter was started with eight founding members in July of 1996. In April of 1999, the Scottsdale Chapter received its Charter at the National Convention held in Palm Springs, California.
Scottsdale N.C.L., Inc. is incorporated with 501(c)(3) status.

Purpose

Our purpose is to enhance the mother and daughter relationships of our members by philanthropically helping our community. It is also important for our daughters to gain educational and cultural experiences as well as to develop civic responsibility.

How to Become a Member

National Charity League, Inc. is a sponsorship organization. This means that in order to receive membership in this organization, you need to be sponsored by an active current member. Mothers with daughters entering the 7th grade through the end of 9th grade are eligible for membership.
Once you have obtained a sponsor, paperwork is filled out and your membership obligations are discussed with you. This process begins in the fall prior to the year you enter.
The membership committee, represented by all grade levels, then meets and literally pulls the names out of a hat until each grade level is full. Class size is limited. If there are more candidates than spaces available, a wait list is maintained until September of the program year.
